Decorative Stone & Gravel

River Rock in Lexington, SC

Smooth, washed stone for beds, borders, and drainage — by the quarter, half, or full yard.

Which one is right for your yard?

Here's how homeowners usually choose:

01

Bright, clean look around the house? Go with Carolina White (3/4"–1") — small, light stone, the popular pick for flower beds, tidy borders, and tree rings near the front door.

02

All-purpose stone almost anywhere? Tennessee (1"–2") is the middle-of-the-road choice — natural tan and gray, comfortable for beds and paths. If you only buy one, this is the safe one.

03

Tight borders or a fine ground cover? The smaller Tennessee (1/2"–3/4") fills narrow spaces and looks neat where a bigger stone would look chunky.

04

Dry creek bed or real water? Go bigger — Tennessee (2"–5") for drainage runs, Hudson Valley (3"–6") as bold accent. Mix big with a smaller size so a creek bed looks natural.

05

Rule of thumb: smaller stone reads soft and decorative; bigger stone reads bold and moves water. Beds and borders lean small; drainage and creek beds lean big.

Still torn between two colors? Swing by the yard and see them side by side before you commit to a full yard.

How much do I need? (a quick example)

How would you like to enter your area?
Most beds take 2–3 inches

River rock is sold by the cubic yard: length (ft) × width (ft) × depth (in) ÷ 12 ÷ 27. A 10 × 8 ft bed at 3" deep is 80 sq ft → 80 × 3 ÷ 12 = 20 cubic feet → 20 ÷ 27 ≈ 0.75 yard (round up to a full yard for a little extra). If the numbers make your head spin, bring your measurements and we'll size it with you.

From the Yard

Putting it down (a few tips)

A little groundwork keeps river rock looking clean and staying put:

01 Lay landscape fabric first. Roll weed-blocking fabric over the soil before you spread stone — it keeps weeds down and stops rock from sinking. Overlap seams a few inches.
02 Add edging. A clean border keeps rock where you put it instead of spreading into the grass.
03 Mind your depth. About 2–3 inches is plenty for most beds. For a dry creek bed, a deeper channel in the middle looks the most natural.
04 Rinse if needed. A quick spray with the hose once it’s spread brings the color right out.

Set it and forget it

River rock is a spread-it-once project — it works year-round without the yearly top-off mulch needs. New to this? Bring your measurements, or even a photo of the space, and we'll help you pick the stone and figure the amount. Give us a call at (803) 715-0387 when you're ready.
